Introduction:
Clomiphene citrate is an antiestrogenic drug that is prescribed to women to treat anovulatory infertility (inability to ovulate). In clinical medicine it is called specifically non-steroidal ovulatory stimulant. The drug works by interacting with estrogen receptors, often antagonistically, in various tissues of the body, including the hypothalamus, pituitary, ovary, endometrium, vagina, and cervix. A major focus is that the drug will oppose the negative feedback of estrogens on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, improving the release of gonadotropins (LH and FSH). This wave of gonadotropins can cause the release of eggs (follicular rupture), ideally leading to conception. Clomiphene citrate is chemically a synthetic estrogen with agonist / antagonist properties, and in this sense it is very similar in structure and action to tamoxifen citrate.

How does clomiphene citrate work?
Clomiphene citrate blocks the effect of the hormone estrogen in your body. This blocking effect tricks your body into bumping into the levels of two other hormones essential for ovulation. These two other hormones are:
follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
and luteinizing hormone (LH)
FSH causes the ovaries in your ovaries to mature, ready for release. LH triggers the release of one or more mature eggs from the ovaries. The egg or eggs move down into one of your fallopian tubes.
Overdosage of Clomifene:
Do not use more than prescribed dose. Taking more medication will not improve your symptoms; rather they may cause poisoning or serious side-effects. If you suspect that you or anyone else who may have overdosed of Clomifene, please go to the emergency department of the closest hospital or nursing home. Bring a medicine box, container, or label with you to help doctors with necessary information.
