Benzocaine
an ester-type, local anesthetic agent derived from aminobenzoic acid that is most useful when applied topically. Topical application of benzocaine may cause methemoglobinemia in infants and small children. A minimum of 5% benzocaine is required in a compound to be effective.
It is used in many over-the-counter compounds for pruritus and pain. Benzocaine has a low incidence of toxicity, but sensitization to it may result from prolonged or frequent use.
Benzocaine is a widely used local anesthetic. It functions by obstructing the entrance of sodium into nerve endings, halting the sensation of pain.
Unlike a general anesthetic that effects the entire body, a local anesthetic desensitizes a specific area of the body. The drug is frequently used in a range of externally applied, over-the-counter products used to numb different areas of the body.
This combination of medications is a common treatment for ear infections, and may aid in the removal of buildups of cerumen, commonly known as earwax.
Local anesthetic has a variety of uses, but chief among them is its use in non-prescription medications and ointments that help decrease minor pain.
People apply the over-the-counter remedies directly to various body surfaces, such as irritated or sunburned skin. Oral uses are also common and can be helpful for mouth or teeth pain. Some people use the medication as a treatment for hemorrhoids or to relieve rectal and vaginal discomfort.
Medical offices and hospitals also utilize benzocaine during procedures that require the insertion of a medical instrument into the body.
This drug is sometimes combined with antipyrine to make a substance called phenazone. Antipyrine has painkilling properties that compliment the numbing effect of benzocaine. The medication is usually available as a liquid, and is applied to the ear via drops.
Mechanism of action
Pain is caused by the stimulation of free nerve endings. Esters of PABA work as a chemical barrier, stopping
When the nerve endings are stimulated, sodium enters the neuron, causing depolarization of the nerve and subsequent initiation of an action potential. The action potential is propagated down the nerve toward the central nervous system, which interprets this as pain.the sodium from entering the nerve ending.
How should I use benzocaine topical?
Use the smallest amount of medicine needed to numb the skin or relieve pain. Do not use large amounts of benzocaine topical, or cover treated skin areas with a bandage or plastic wrap without medical advice.
Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
What should I avoid while using benzocaine topical?
Benzocaine topical is for use only on the surface of your body, or just inside the mouth, vagina, or rectum. Avoid swallowing the gel, liquid, or ointment while applying it to your gums or the inside of your mouth.
Avoid eating within 1 hour after using benzocaine topical on your gums or inside your mouth.
Avoid getting this medication in your eyes. The throat spray or oral lozenge may be swallowed gradually during use.
