Introduction:
Estradiol Cypionate (EC, E2C), is a synthetic estrogen ester that acts as a prodrug of estradiol and therefore is considered a natural and bioidentical form of estrogen. Together with estradiol valerate, estradiol cypionate is one of the most commonly used estradiol esters.
Estradiol cypionate is an estradiol ester or an estradiol prodrug. As such, it is an estrogen, or an estrogen receptor agonist. The affinity of estradiol valerate to the estrogen receptor was reported as 50-fold lower than that of estradiol, and estradiol valerate and estradiol cypionate had similar affinity for the estrogen receptor. Both estradiol cypionate and estradiol valerate are rapidly eliminated in estradiol in the body, and estradiol valerate has been unable to target target tissues at any concentration of significance. As such, estradiol valerate is considered essentially inactive in terms of the estrogenic effect itself, acting solely as a prodrug for estradiol, and estradiol cypionate is described as a prodrug of estradiol in a similar manner.
