Levonorgestrel, also known as 17α-ethynyl-18-methyl-19-nortestosterone or as 17α-ethynyl-18-methylestr-4-en-17β-ol-3-one, is a synthetic estrane steroid and a derivative of testosterone. It is the C13β or levorotatory stereoisomer and enantiopure form of norgestrel, the C13α or dextrorotatory isomer being inactive. Levonorgestrel is more specifically a derivative of norethisterone (17α-ethynyl-19-nortestosterone) and is the parent compound of the gonane (18-methylestrane) subgroup of the 19-nortestosterone family of progestins.
 
 
Levonorgestrel, synthetic progestogen (any progestational steroid, such as progesterone) that is used as a form of contraception in women.
In addition, levonorgestrel causes the mucus in the cervix to thicken, which blocks the ability of sperm to travel through the uterus and into the fallopian tubes, where fertilization of the egg by a sperm normally takes place.
 
 
As a form of progesterone, levonorgestrel exerts its actions on the hypothalamus through a negative feedback mechanism, which causes a decrease in the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).
 
 
 
Levonorgestrel is the mirror compound (enantiomer) of norgestrel, which was synthesized in the early 1960s by American scientist Herschel Smith at the U.S.-based company Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Both LH and FSH normally stimulate ovulation. Thus, by reducing their secretion, levonorgestrel serves to inhibit ovulation. The drug also inhibits implantation, the point when a fertilized egg embeds in the uterine wall, where it will grow and develop into an embryo.
 
 
 
 
Do not use levonorgestrel
 
 
If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to levonorgestrel or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.
Allergy symptoms may include:
- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- Hives, itching, rash
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).
 
 
 
How to Use Ethinyl-Estradiol-Levonorgestrel
 
 
Oral Tablet
Take this medicine by mouth. Take this medicine at the same time each day and in the order directed on the package. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. To reduce nausea, this medicine may be taken with food. Follow the directions on the prescription label.
 
Contact your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. This medicine has been used in female children who have started having menstrual periods.

Besides 750 or 1500 micrograms levonorgestrel, this medicine contains as excipient lactose monohydrate, corn starch, povidone, colloidal anhydrous silica and magnesium stearate.
 
 
 
Indications and usage
 
 
The active ingredient levonorgestrel in a 750 or 1500 micrograms dosage form, is indicated for emergency contraception within 72 hours of having had unprotected sex or a failure of birth control measures.
 
 
Emergency contraception does not prevent pregnancy in every case, especially if there is no certainty about the time that occurred the unprotected sex.
